Insurance 101
What's the Difference Between Term and Whole Life Insurance?
Short answer: Term life covers you for a set period, such as 10, 20 or 30 years, and pays a death benefit only if you pass away during that term. Whole life is permanent coverage designed to last your entire life, and it builds cash value over time. Term is usually far less expensive for the same amount of coverage; whole life costs more but doesn't expire.
Term life insurance
- Coverage for a specific time, often chosen to match a need: the years until your mortgage is paid off, or until your kids are grown.
- Lower premiums for the amount of coverage, which is why many families use it to get the most protection for their budget.
- No cash value. If the term ends and you're still living, the coverage ends. Some policies let you renew or convert to permanent coverage, often with conditions.
Whole life insurance
- Lifelong coverage as long as premiums are paid.
- Cash value that grows over time. Depending on the policy, you may be able to borrow against it. Loans and withdrawals reduce the death benefit and cash value, and have their own terms.
- Higher premiums than term for the same death benefit, typically level for life.
How to think about which fits
Rather than "which is better," it helps to ask what the coverage is for:
- A temporary need (replacing income while kids are young, covering a mortgage) often points toward term.
- A permanent need (final expenses, leaving something behind, certain estate-planning goals) may point toward permanent coverage, such as whole life.
- Many people use a combination: a larger term policy for the high-need years, and a smaller permanent policy for lifelong needs.
Your health, age, budget and goals all matter, and underwriting varies by insurance company.
